Reading at Dorrington

Developing reading skills is a focus throughout the curriculum at Dorrington Academy.

Reading is taught daily through a combination of shared and guided reading. We are continually updating our resources, ensuring we capture the children’s imagination and motivate them to read a variety of text types and genres. The children are provided with a wide range of reading materials including scheme books from Oxford Reading Tree and Ginn, together with stories from famous authors and information texts linked to science, history and geography. All children are heard reading on a 1:1 basis where they can really explore texts which motivate them and build their confidence.

Each term, a history based text is shared with the children as a basis for their topic work and provides cross-curricular links to learning.

We celebrate World Book Day with visits from storytellers, competitions and buddy reading sessions. Our whole school productions are linked to reading and parents are invited to visit our exhibition of work. Previous productions have included “Read All About it” and “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.”
