Pupils at our school are celebrating racing success after taking third place in a regional event hosted at Birmingham City Football Club.

As part of a project delivered by the Greenpower Education Trust, a group of Year 6 pupils from the our school were set the challenge of designing and building their own electric race car from a construction kit.

Throughout the process, pupils developed a basic understanding of mechanics, learning how to use tools before progressing to fundamental electrical skills, including preparing and installing the car’s wiring.

Following the build, the pupils moved into the design phase, naming their car ‘Dorrington McQueen’. They used recyclable materials to construct the body panels before painting and adding some creative touches – including a classic lightning bolt.

The event, which brought together schools and community charities from across the Midlands, was designed to inspire enthusiasm for Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths (STEM) through the excitement of motorsport.

Based on their impressive performance and excellent teamwork, the Year 6 pupils secured a third-place finish overall, achieving second place in the drag races and third in the circuit hot laps.

John Harrison, Headteacher, said: “We are incredibly proud of our Year 6 pupils and their achievements at this special event.

“We believe it is incredibly important to offer the chance for our pupils to take part in a wide range of learning opportunities beyond the classroom, inspiring them to aim high and discover new talents and career pathways along the way.

“The children showed real commitment in seeing this project through from start to finish and their performance on the day was outstanding. Well done everyone!”
